"mother capture" 2016Gallery Yamaki Fine Art is proud to announce a solo exhibition of Kirico, “mother capture”.
Kirico is a photographer and video artist born in 1978 in Kyoto. Documenting her families and spouses through photographs and videos, Kirico reveals with sensitivity, the intimate relationships she beholds with those she is deeply related to. Here, the distinction between the self and the artist is lost, and although it may be a documentary through the eyes of one particular woman, the raw lives of those documented appear through the photographer’s conflicting standpoint of urgency and objectivity, which thus become a universal language to stimulate the viewers mind.
The new body of work “mother capture” is based on female pregnancy and infertility, and was conceived as a response to the artist’s own struggle to face her friends who had become mothers. However, the sceneries captured by setting a video camera and recorded in the absence of the photographer, to Kirico, “felt like it was a release from my personal subjective feelings and seemed as if they were embodying the reality”.
This is the artist’s first exhibition at Gallery Yamaki Fine Art, and is bound to be a milestone in Kirico’s career, marking a new development.

My work is about women’s happiness and the way of living, of which themes I overlap with my own life.
I myself is undergoing an infertility treatment, and is one of many childless women desperate for babies.
Painful treatments, expensive doctor’s fees, and the endless cycle of high and low feelings before and after the period is what constitutes my daily life. I feel the pressure from others and when hearing news of another friend becoming a mother, I cannot help but feel imperfectness as well as a sense of defeat. Such feelings sometimes swell so much that I almost lose myself in them.
Yet those friends who become new mothers are my hope and whom I long to be. To recognize their existence more objectively, I stopped clicking the shutter and decided to leave the room discreetly after setting up the video camera. The film shot without a photographer seemed to reveal the reality just as it is, relieved from my subjective and personal intention.
