Gallery Yamaki Fine Art is thrilled to announce a solo show of new works by Seiichi Shibata from Sat. Dec 3 – Tue. Dec 27, 2016. Shibata (b.1984-) from Kagawa, Japan, graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts receiving a master degree in sculpture and is currently based in Kansai. This is his 3rd solo show at Gallery Yamaki Fine Art and will primarily present his latest works.

The series “Untitled”, the main feature of this exhibition, were developed from the paper cutting series which were Shibata’s debut works. Although departing from his early works, in the new series he eliminates color and applies the idea into a three-dimensional form through analytical thinking. Shibata, interested in “the mistakes in the process of creation”, hints out through his works, the answer to the eternal question on how artists should face the unexpected failures in production. Shibata attempts “to think by deconstructing the act of drawing” through breaking down the process of making into three stages; “small-scale modeling,” “selection and configuration” and “fixation”. By carefully observing his own processes with an objective point of view, he plunges into experimental challenges which guide him to a new creative horizon. Following such steps, Shibata manages to reveal and examine certain aspects involved in the making, such as deconstruction and integration, observation and practice, working in detail and the overall finish, all which in a typical process the artist would not consider important but instead let to slip away unconsciously. We may see here Shibata’s quiet yet strong will to continue working with his own hands.

This exhibition will present 30 new works from the “Untitled” series, 2016. When compared to Shibata’s past works, his new series, despite color being ascetic suppressed, brings the viewer’s a fresh surprise with a variety of complex yet delicate expressions. Please enjoy this opportunity to explore the latest work of Seiichi Shibata, an upcoming artists continuously striving to achieve new expressions.
