《― A Group Portrait of Anthropocene ―》2022 Blue tarp, Sheet string, Dove, Thread, IronGallery Yamaki Fine Art is pleased to present the second solo exhibition of up-and-coming visual artist Hiroko Kubo at our gallery. –This time, Kubo’s solo exhibition at Ebiden Gallery (Hiroshima) in January, 2022, will be the centerpiece of the exhibition.
Hiroko Kubo was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1987, and currently lives and works in Hiroshima after receiving her MFA from Texas Christian University. Her works, which are based on the themes of agriculture and idols, using materials familiar to daily life, while drawing on theories of prehistoric art, ethnic art, and cultural anthropology, were featured in “Takamatsu Contemporary Art Annual vol.10 There Are No Boundaries Here. /?” (Takamatsu Art Museum, 2022), “Saitama International Art Festival” (2020), “Rokko Meets Art: Art Walk 2020”, “A Place to Farm Life – Agriculture Opens the Future of Art” (Aomori Museum of Art, 2019), “Matsuri, Matsuru” (Spiral Garden [Tokyo], 2018). In these and other exhibitions, the artist has shown viewers the dynamism of human creative activity and imagination in response to the local environment. What have we inherited and what are we indifferent to today, living on the same land and living beyond the history of creation that has continued uninterruptedly since prehistoric times? Her works, which are created by exploring the relationship between our prehistoric ancestors and our contemporary lives, while connecting with the imagination of the distant past, arouse the viewer’s primitive creative power.
For this exhibition, she will create a huge work using a blue sheet as a material, filling the entire gallery space. The keyword is “Anthropocene”. This is a term coined by geologists to describe the fact that human activities have imprinted geological changes on the earth comparable to asteroid impacts and volcanic eruptions in the past.
In this exhibition, she attempts to question the creation of our present and future, as she has developed her works by unraveling myths and history from her unique sculptural perspective. The group portraits that unfold before your eyes are a mixture of death and life, destruction and construction, the everyday and the extraordinary, and will stand in front of you as a new story of human beings living in contemporary society. Please come and see Kubo’s ambitious work, which will be exhibited for the first time in the Kansai region.
