Kenji INUMAKI: ’22 Study

Kenji INUMAKI: ’22 Study

Gallery Yamaki Fine Art is pleased to announce a solo exhibition, ’22 Study, from 3 Dec. 2022~3 Feb. 2023 by Kenji Inumaki, who was highly acclaimed in the 1970s as an important trend contemporary with the Mono-ha school. This exhibition, his fourth at Gallery Yamaki Fine Art in three years, will feature new works from his “White works series; Sort of primitive idealistic space” series (white works) and new works using his own rollers, which he has been working on continuously in recent years, as well as rare drawings from the 1980s and two-dimensional works using ink pots. and ink pot works.

Kenji Inumaki was born in Osaka in 1943, and gained attention as one of the artists of the Mono-ha school with his string works that appear to be made of standing glass and his three-dimensional works using wire, which he exhibited around 1970. His works, which were based on the interpretation and composition of minimal art rooted in the Japanese climate, were exhibited at the “10th Japan International Art Exhibition: Human and Material” (1970, curated by Yusuke Nakahara) and the “8th Biennale des Youth in Paris” (1973), and are highly regarded as one of the most important benchmarks of this period. From the mid-1970s, he developed his thinking in two-dimensional works, producing original works that evoke the artist’s breath and delicate fluctuation, such as squares of square paper painted with colored pencils and colored surfaces painted with light colors of watercolor paints. As art critic Yusuke Nakahara called his “line-ism,” Inumaki consistently creates works in which the repetition of the simple act of “drawing a line” is the result, or expression, of his work.

In this exhibition, we present a series of ambitious works that approach the act of “drawing lines” more directly through intuition and impulse. With a keen eye on the contemporary, Inumaki continues to experiment with materials and techniques while exploring the relationship between “human and material” today. We hope you will take this opportunity to view his new works, which show new developments.
