Kozo Shibataka ‘NEW WORKS’

Kozo Shibataka ‘NEW WORKS’Kozo Shibataka 《 To Cythere Ⅱ》 2014 36.0×36.0cm Monotype

Gallery Yamaki Fine Art is proud to present Kozo Shibataka’s solo exhibition ‘NEW WORKS’. Kozo Shibataka (b.1948 in Osaka ) graduated from Musashino Art University in 1968. Since 1970 he has been based in Kansai, building his own language experimentally as a copperplate printing artist. The characteristic lines in his works are often referred to as ‘innocent lines’, with no excess, omitting a unique tension and bringing infinite rhythms.

Since his participation in ‘Art Now ’82’ (Hyogo Municipal Museum of Modern Art), he has been working globally presenting in international exhibitions and his skilled art of printing is receiving much attention. Recently he expands his expressions to ‘book art’ and installations and his further explorations are to be looked forward to.

It has been 4 years since his last solo exhibition at Gallery Yamaki Fine Art. We will present 20 of his latest works which have been inspired by the Botticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’, the masterpiece of Italian Renaissance. Having worked on the Botticelli’s series from around 2007, his printing techniques, lines and shapes have been enriched and perfected even more, taking his works to a new level. All works are a unique piece monotype and also in some works old plates are applied, showing us traces of Shibataka’s past and present; a new presentation. Please may you enjoy this opportunity of retracing over 40 years of Shibataka’s history.
