Like Jomon Lines

Sat, Jan 27, 2024 – Thu, Feb 29, 2024

Gallery Yamaki Fine Art is pleased to present “Homage to Kenji Inumaki, The First Chapter: Like Jomon Lines.” Kenji Inumaki was one of the members of the postwar Japanese art movement, Mono-ha. His unique works, which were ahead of their time, had been drawing attention again in recent years, however, he sadly passed away in January, 2023. Gallery Yamaki Fine Art will hold a series of tribute exhibitions to honor Inumaki’s achievements from various perspectives.

This exhibition features his later production “Jomon-sen no youna,” a series of paintings created with a self-made roller by Inumaki, along with an ambitious series of woodblock prints by Seiichi Shibata, that he has been working on in recent years. They share a common interest in line, color, as well as their overlap, and have interpreted the idea of space in the two-dimensional plane in their own way. Inumaki’s and Shibata’s creative practice which is reduced to a simple act, eliminating arbitrariness, gives us a fresh surprise beyond the motives and intentions of their work.

By juxtaposing the works of Inumaki and Shibata, this homage show reviews Inumaki’s accomplishments from a new context and highlights the influence of Inumaki’s creation on the artists who lead the future, and his thoughts that have been passed down from one generation to the next. We expect that the exhibition will be a place where new discoveries and values are born through the interaction between their own paths.
