HAYASHI is a video artist based in Kansai area, Japan whose works have been presented in exhibitions and film festivals in and outside Japan. Having had a solo exhibition in 2010 at Gallery Yamaki Fine Art, this is his second solo show.
HAYASHI was born in Kyoto in 1976, and started making videos in 1997. He uses photos as materials for his video making. He takes thousands of them and loads them on the computer, cuts them out, and lays them one after another. This practice may remind us of the ways of modern communication or memorization through digital media or the internet. Several works from his latest videos are exhibited this time.
image data
Images of digital data exist within x-axis (horizontal) and y-axis (vertical).
There I add the information of z-axis (depth).
Yet the image’s depth (z-axis) exists only in the illusion of the surface,
telling us the fact there isn’t even 1mm or 1px of thickness.
Floating luminously in the endless space of x, y, z,
Images behold power to move us mankind, society and the times.
What are we looking at, and where are they going?
Anticipating our existence, relationships, dimensions or our perceptions in the modern age to emerge, I pursue to question such things.
