From about 1960, MATSUTANI started to employ vinyl bond – a material produced in Japan soon after the war. With this, he created relief-like art works by making use of its malleability to create organic forms. The sensuous shapes that drape and swell upon the surface were acclaimed for signalling new possibilities of painting and were highly appreciated. Catching the attention of Jiro Yoshihara, MATSUTANI was invited to become a member of the Gutai Art Association. He went over to France at the age of 29 with a scholarship granted by the French government. He has been living in Paris since and divided his time between France and Japan. In 2017 he participated in the Venice Biennale for the main section.
